Express Harlequin RIP Options

You can purchase options for the Express Harlequin RIP to dramatically improve the performance, add screening for your application, and add features like trapping, simple imposition, die-line export, and CIP3 output.

Performance Options

The 3 Performance options for the Express Harlequin RIP will allow the Express RIP to fully utilize the computer's resources and dramatically increase the throughput for multiple-page and variable data document.

For Multiple-Page Document

If you are printing multiple-page document, the Max Thread and Harlequin Parallel Pages options allow full utilization of computing threads to process more than a page at a time.

For Variable Data Document

If you are printing variable data document, the Max Thread, Harlequin Parallel Pages and Harlequin VariData options will provide the best performance by caching the static elements and ripping only the variable elements, at more than one page simultaneously. As an example, a variable data job with 4 records per page and a total of 10,000 pages will take 1 hour and 17 min to process on a standard Express RIP with no options added. The same job will take 11 min only with all 3 options enabled.

Max Thread

Multi-threading Support

Multi-threading allows the Express RIP to take advantage of hyperthreading and multi-core CPU architectures as well as multiple processors. The standard Express RIP already provides 4 threads. If you need to use more, you can purchase either the 8-Thread option to go up to 8 threads, or the Unlimited-Thread option to go up to any number of threads.

Harlequin Parallel Page HPP

Maximize Throughput

The Parallel Pages option decouples interpretation from compositing and rendering, allowing one thread to interpret page two of a job while the other threads are still compositing, rendering and outputting page one. This ensures the highest possible throughput.

Harlequin VariData HVD

VDP Optimization

Harlequin VariData greatly accelerates the printing of variable data jobs that were saved either as PDF/VT or as regular PDF. Harlequin VariData intelligently recognizes variable data and static backgrounds in personalized print, direct mail and transpromo jobs enabling them to be greatly accelerated, even if the PDF file was not constructed very efficiently.

Screening Options

The 3 screening options for the Express RIP provide screenings suitable for inkjet presses, flexo and offset printing.


1, 2, 3, 4-bit Screening

Express MultiBit screening provides 1-bit, 2-bit, 3-bit and 4-bit screening with 5 screens Super Fine, Fine, Medium, Coarse and Super Coarse. Linearization tool is provided to set the entry point of each level. MultiBit Screening must be used with Compose MultiBit Plugin. Please contact Compose for more information.

HXM Cross Modulated Screening

Cross Modulated Screens for Flexo and Offset

Harlequin Cross Modulated Screening (HXM) merges the best aspects of stochastic and conventional screens to give you smooth, exceptionally printable, high-quality tints. The size of the halftone dots can be controlled at both ends of the tone scale: highlights and shadows. The full tonal range is printable without artifacts, even at higher screen rulings than you though possible.

HXM is available at both offset and flexo screen angles, and enables fine control over the minimum dot size to ensure crisp highlight tone reproduction in your specific environment.

HDS Stochastic Screening

Stochastic FM Screening

With this option users can output using our FM/Stochastic screen sets, and now you can also output using a newly developed Stochastic Yellow feature. This feature allows users to output Cyan, Magenta, and Black along with any spot colors using Harlequin's conventional AM screen sets while applying a stochastic screen to the Yellow.

Miscellaneous Options

The Express RIP also has various options to provide additional functionalities such as trapping, generating CUIP3 data, simple imposition for booklet, and exporting die-lines from job.


Automated Trapping

TrapPro is an automatic, object-based in-RIP trapping solution available as an option for the Express RIP. TrapPro is integrated into the RIP for enhanced workflow efficiency and maximum job throughput.

CIP3 Ink Preset

Preset Inks On Press

Time and material can be wasted at the start of each press run while waiting for a quality sheet to print. Presetting your presses is one of the most important aspects of a prepress workflow. CIP3 saves wasted time by analyzing the same data used for printing plates and then shares that information with the press control system.

Harlequin RIP Simple Imposition is an easy to use tool designed to address the most common imposition layout schemes, often eliminating the need for a separate imposition application.

Contour Processor

Easily Export Die-lines

Many packaging and label jobs include die lines and other technical separations which often need to be printed for proofing, or for aligning prints and pre-cut media or post-print die cutting. Those separations need to be removed from the raster data for production printing. Harlequin Contour Processor™ intercepts specified spot separations.
